3 Tips for Getting Back on Track After the Holidays
3 Tips for Getting Back on Track After the Holidays Are you and your child having a hard time getting back into the swing of things after the holiday break? Youre not alone! The week following the winter holidays is one of the most challenging times of the year for families of kids with ADHD. The excitement and intensity of the holidays, the delicious treats, late bedtimes and lazy mornings, and extra screen time sets kids up for a difficult adjustment when they return to school. For kids with ADHD, their symptoms often seem to be at their worst this week, and many will be more argumentative and oppositional than usual. As a parent, youre undoubtedly having a difficult time getting back into your own routine, and have less energy available to deal with your childs challenges. While the first few weeks in January will never be without their difficulties, there are things you can do to help them go as smoothly as possible for you and your child. Adjust Your Expectations. Your child is going to have more difficulty getting out of the house in the morning, will probably forget things that he or she needs to bring home from school, will have a hard time getting started on homework, and will have a more difficult time falling asleep at night. This is normal and to be expected! Provide your child with extra support if he or she needs it, and be patient when things dont go as planned. Just because your child is struggling this week doesnt mean that things will always be this way. This is a temporary situation and your child will be back on track soon. Minimize Your Own Tasks and Commitments. This adjustment period will go more smoothly if you keep your own responsibilities and commitments to a minimum. While you cant stop doing all of the things that keep your home and life running smoothly, there are things that you can do to reduce the burden. Plan meals that require little prep work or clean up, put off any non-essential errands, and ask for help from other parents, friends, and family with things like school or activity pick-ups and drop-offs. Schedule fun family activities for the weeks ahead. For most kids, the holidays are followed by a long stretch of winter that doesnt include many planned fun activities at home or at school. This can take a serious toll on a childs mood and motivation, especially when a child has ADHD. Schedule fun activities that your child and your family can look forward to. Friday family movie nights, ice skating or sledding, a visit to an indoor waterpark or activity center, and a trip to your familys favorite museum are all fun ways to spend time on winter weekends. Schedule these activities in advance, and post them somewhere at home where your child can see the list every day. When your child is feeling down, remind him or her of all of the exciting days ahead. The return to school after the winter break isnt easy for kids with ADHD or their families. A little planning, patience, and understanding can go a long way in making this time as enjoyable as possible for you and your child. ABOUT DR. Improving Your Study Skills
Improving Your Study Skills I was once one of those students who would cram information and struggled with how to study and how to do so effectively. I got tired of struggling a decided it was time to make some changes I am still learning but below I will share some of my techniques with you.1. Youtube VideosI remember a few years ago one of my teachers suggested that I use Youtube Videos to get an understanding of any information I did not understand in class. I never applied the technique of youtubing videos until I was preparing for an exam and was in desperate need of grasping a specific topic. The trick to watching Youtube videos is not just finding topics on the topic you are struggling with, but finding someone who explains it in a way conducive to you're learning style. Be sure to take notes and then go through them afterward and integrate them with your notes. If watching videos on subjects such as the sciences and math, be sure to do application to make sure your fully grasp the information2.Study in the Morning and Early EveningAfter a long day of class or work,(for those of us who study and go to school), we are mentally exhausted at night. I used to torture myself trying to stay up late and study until I realized I could not do it anymore because it wasn't effective. After trial and error I realized mornings were perfect because that's when our minds are refreshed and Early evening works too because though we may be tired we are still slightly alert then.3. Spread out your Studying, Don't cramSo earlier I mentioned that I was a crammer, but that was because I was a procrastinator, like many of you who read this may be. Procrastinating is a bad habit (I'm still working on breaking this habit), and it can be our worst enemy. When we try to cram information before a test, it's hard for us to grasp everything. I suggest creating a schedule over a span of a few days to do any readings, go through and add to notes, as well as do any practice problems. This allows you to ensure that you fully grasp the information. Also it allows you the ability to go to your professor or teachers for any lingering questions as well as to clarify anything you still don't quite understand. For those who have techniques but needed some helpful addition, may this be of your benefit and for those of who you are still struggle of where to begin, this is a good start. Remember that learning how to study is done by trial and error. All of our minds function differently, but don't give up, keep trying until you find what works best for you.Happy Studying!
If You Want An Education, Go To The Library
If You Want An Education, Go To The Library If you want to get laid, go to college. If you want an education, go to the library. ~Frank Zappa (1940-1993) Frank (Vincent) Zappa was an American musician, songwriter, composer, record producer, and filmmaker. Scientists have honored Zappa by naming their discoveries after him. For instance, Ferdinando Boero, biologist from Genova, named a Californian jellyfish Phialella zappai, noting that he had pleasure in naming this species after the modern music composer. Zappa loved libraries, but he hated formal education. Being a student in the modern world is challenging on many levels. If your child or someone you know is struggling in their education, you may be in need of an accomplished tutor. TutorZ provides extensive tutoring services in writing, math, biology, music, world languages and more.
5 Reasons to Hire an Orange County Tutor - TutorNerds
5 Reasons to Hire an Orange County Tutor - TutorNerds 5 reasons you know its time to hire an Orange County tutor Students have been back in the classroom for a while and are, hopefully, well adjusted to all of the academic tasks they have to cope with throughout the school year. If students are struggling with core subjects or having difficulty concentrating at this point in the term, its probably no longer due to an adjustment from summer break. Students may need a little bit of extra help getting organized, especially with all of the things they have to do in the classroom and for homework assignments. Each student is an individual and will have different needs, but there are five universal signs that a student needs to work with a private Orange County tutor. 1. An overabundance of stress Except midterm and finals week students should be enjoying the process of learning and school overall. Learning new things can be stressful, and a little bit of stress is not harmful, but if students are overwhelmed with the stress they may be unable to cope on their own. In many cases, a tutor can come to the home and help students get organized. Often students discover they are totally capable on an academic level but need help streamlining homework assignments and prioritizing what needs to get done first. When students are studying more efficiently, their stress will lower, and theyll be more successful overall. 2. A sharp decline in grades Grades will go up and down throughout the year depending on the subject matter and level of difficulty. However, if a student usually gets straight As and they are, all of a sudden, bringing home Câs and Ds, parents should see it as a warning sign. A sharp to decline in grades may mean that a student is struggling with new learning material or their stress level is so high that they have just given up. Its important that students have a chance to get some help before these few assignments affect their overall GPA (READ: 4 Reasons Students Should Take an Extracurricular This Fall). 3. Students are avoiding starting homework Students dont love homework assignments to start with but if they are avoiding getting started with homework on a regular basis, students might need a little bit of extra help with study skills or organization. In many cases, the actual academic assignments are not so bad, but they may require students to organize at a level theyre not used to or be extremely efficient with time management. Many students and parents complain that they have too much homework to complete and so working with a tutor to streamline assignments can make homework a lot easier in general. 4. Comments from the teacher The classroom teacher works with students on a daily basis and has a good idea whether a student is just experiencing normal ups and downs or if theyre truly struggling with new material. As students enter middle and high school, the assignments become more challenging, and stress levels increase dramatically. If a teacher notes that a student would benefit from extra help, itâs a big sign to the parents that their kid might need to work with a one-on-one tutor until they get back on track. 5. A student no longer has a favorite subject Most elementary school students have a favorite subject that they always enjoy learning about from day to day. However, if a student expresses they no longer love science or that theyre no longer interested in reading it might be a sign that the subject matter has become more difficult than theyâre used to. It can be frustrating for students to have a barrier to learning, especially if its their favorite subject and so working with a tutor can help them get past the hurdles and love their favorite subject once again. Its smart to get an Orange County private tutor early on in the school year. Call us today to learn more. All blog entries, with the exception of guest bloggers, are written by Tutor Nerds.
